Dear Aspiring Coach,
So, you want to be a coach? Amazing. You’re stepping into one of the most rewarding, transformative, and at times, downright confronting careers out there. But before you expect six-figure months and a calendar full of dream clients, let’s talk about what this journey actually looks like.
1. Think of This as an Apprenticeship
You wouldn’t expect a first-year apprentice electrician to charge what a fully qualified sparky does, right? So why do so many new coaches expect instant clients, high-ticket prices, and effortless success? Coaching is a craft. It takes time to refine.
The best coaches aren’t just born, they’re built. Through hours of practice, real-life experience, and yes, even failing. So instead of beating yourself up for not being “there” yet, embrace the process. Do your time. Learn. Improve. And stop comparing yourself to those who have been at this for years.
2. Get a Part-Time Job
Seriously. If you’re putting all your financial pressure on coaching from day one, you’re setting yourself up for stress and desperation, which, spoiler alert, is not the energy that attracts clients.
A part-time job buys you the breathing room to grow your coaching skills without the panic of needing to make rent. It means you can build a business you actually love, not one that’s built from fear and pressure.
3. What Have You Achieved? Teach That.
Before you start coaching, ask yourself: What have I actually done? Coaching isn’t about being a guru or having all the answers, it’s about guiding people through what you’ve already navigated.
Have you built a thriving business? Overcome anxiety? Created an incredible relationship? Mastered emotional regulation? Whatever it is, own it. Your experience is your credibility. Start there.
4. It’s All a Mindset Game
If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. If you’re riddled with self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and fear of failure… welcome to the club. Every successful coach has been there. The difference? They don’t let it stop them.
This journey will stretch you. It will expose every insecurity you have. And that’s a good thing. Because the more you work on you, the better you can hold space for others. Coaching isn’t just about tools and strategies, it’s about who you are and how you show up.
The Most Rewarding, Crazy Ride of Your Life
This path isn’t for the faint of heart. It will challenge you in ways you never imagined. But if you stick with it—if you embrace the growth, the discomfort, the work, you’ll find yourself in a career that changes lives (including your own).
So take a deep breath. Do your time. Keep learning. Keep growing. And trust that this ride? It’s so worth it.
You’ve got this.
Ego death in business is a strange thing — it’s messy, beautiful, and brutal. And this rebrand? It was born through it.
The personal development world loves a good outgrowing story. Outgrowing friends. Outgrowing relationships. Outgrowing careers.
When I left my teaching career in 2020 to start an education company, I fantasised about long, relaxing morning routines, midweek coffee dates…
